A very sad day for me. One of my heroes in life has passed after a long battle with a terminal disease. Ted Kennedy led an imperfect life, as he was a flawed and complex man. Yes, in his life he caroused, and drank too much, and there are questions about a single evening on the Vineyard in 1969 that likely will never be resolved. But, at the same time, he gathered his attributes to eventually defeat his demons. After losing his inevitable race for the White House in 1980, when he saw a lesser politician and lesser statesman carry the Democratic banner, at a time he may well have drawn about himself the shroud of bitterness and self pity, he emerged anew, refreshed and invigorated, and launched the most astonishing comeback in American political history. Ted Kennedy spent the next 29 years as what is being called the Lion of the Senate. Camus tells us a man does not achieve greatness by conquering one end of a discourse, but by mastering both ends at once. Who ever did this better than Kennedy, who, as a staunch liberal, worked closely with and counted far right wing Republicans among his closest and dearest friends? His life knew enough tsuris for a thousand lifetimes
