Newsflash
You have to be deeply convinced of their own experience that your response to alcohol is so abnormal that any indulgence in the drink itself is a totally undesirable and unacceptable way of life. You have to be absolutely sincere in the desire to break the drinking once and for all. You have to recognize that the problem of drinking is not a matter of amusement for you. You must clearly realize that every man who once crosses between a additional social drink, never again will be able to drink. You have to recognize that it would case drinking is your most personal issue that affects you in the first row.

Scott W, To every problem, there is a solution which is logical, elegant, simple, direct, and WRONG!!! I'm sure you feel that way.  I feel differently. You statement ignores the body of medical evidence currently available. Can you show me any body of medical evidence which shows that a particular person is born with an addiction to drugs which stays with him or her throughout their life and renders them incapable of making the choice of whether to use drugs or not? I didn't think so. Because you are fortunate enough to be able to avoid addiction easily, do not assume it is equally easy for others. Nobody said it was easy.  Life is hard. Everybody makes choices.  Some are good, some are bad, but they are *choices*, and I require people to live with the consequences of those choices, good or bad, and not whine about how hard life is when they make the wrong choices.  I had my opportunity to turn to drug abuse, and I chose not to.  Why should I have to pay for someone who makes the wrong choice? Accepting that addiction is a disease does not absolve the patient of responsibility any more than calling diabetes a disease absolves the patient of responsibility for managing diet and taking insulin properly.  It simply provides a path to a more effective method of controlling the effects of the disease. One does not *get* diabetes by choice.  One cannot say I think I'll become a diabetic today.   That is a disease.   Drug addiction is a CHOICE.  Without qualification or excuse, at some point, the person was faced with the decision to either use drugs or not use drugs. Everything that happens after that is a consequence of THAT CHOICE. Calling drug addiction a disease is a rationalization to squeeze money out of the public for rehabilitation and to try to justify the consequences of their bad choices because it gives them something to blame their addiction on other than their own faulty judgement. If you make a CHOICE to get a gun and stick up a convienence store, and you get shot dead in the process, should we call it a disease? I don't think so. The important thing is to give children *other choices* and to teach them that the wrong choices can and will screw up their lives *forever*.   But excusing bad choices under the guise of disease is simply liberal angst and do-goodery.  Well, do your good on YOUR dime, not mine.
