Newsflash
You have to be deeply convinced of their own experience that your response to alcohol is so abnormal that any indulgence in the drink itself is a totally undesirable and unacceptable way of life. You have to be absolutely sincere in the desire to break the drinking once and for all. You have to recognize that the problem of drinking is not a matter of amusement for you. You must clearly realize that every man who once crosses between a additional social drink, never again will be able to drink. You have to recognize that it would case drinking is your most personal issue that affects you in the first row.

I'm writing these words pretty drunk right now, having polished off 2 pitchers of margarita with a couple of pals. I came uhome and played on guitar and sang sweet marie , I want you and 1 verse of stuck inside of mobile . I was surprised to see I could remember all the words okay but slurred them a bit and messed up the chords on guitar much more often than usual (i.e. never.) anyway, I have been disappointed to see very little followup on the post a couple of weeks to the effect that Dylan has been put through an alcohol intervention by his family in 94 and this has had an effect, postive, on his performances. It seems to me this should be a subject of major concern to RMD. Is it time to appoint a Dylan and Alcohol agent (Craig?) How much of this rumour has been confirmed? And do people think being drunk really effects a perofrmance negatively (I had a lot of energy just singin these songs... ) What shows can people confirm Dylan was drunk (apart from, famously, the 74 Chile benefit?) Suspect he was drunk. Is he an alcoholic. What does this mean? Hoping for a good round of reflection on this, cheers, Thad

And do people think being drunk really effects a perofrmance negatively (I had a lot of energy just singin these songs... ) Maybe the next time you play drunk you should tape it, listen to it later, and then render an opinion.  Hell, if you're drunk enough, you might even like the way I sound. I have no doubt being drunk can negatively affect a performance (notice I can spell these words properly, as I am sober right now), and most definitely vocals.  Some more than others, I'd guess.  I doubt many singers who might sing live drunk would want to hit the studios in the same condition.  Probably some of the trappings that go along with being drunk night after night would have an effect as well.  That is, what are the problems behind the alcoholism? As for news on Dylan cooling it on the liquor, I haven't seen anything.  I hope it's true. Rick

Drinking and performing (I'm a bass p_layer_ in a _meta_l band and play guitar and sing folky Dylan type songs) and it depends on what you call drunk...if finishing a bottle of wine, or a six pack it (I personnally think) makes you play better.  Now if you're talking a bottle of Jack or drunk as in you can't move without heaving, then I am inclined to think it will negatively affect your performance.  Performing under the influence of other things tends to follow the same rule...if I smoke a dime bag worth of pot I perform fine.  If I smoke a 50 bag or an ounce, I could hardly walk...see what I mean?

Hoping for a good round of reflection on this, Difficult topic.  Being a Dylan fan I make every attempt to respect his privacy and such but can't help being curious about this aspect of his life.  Can someone summarize the facts that do exist.  Has Dylan been treated for alcoholism?  Does he drink today?  Has he ever spoken about his drinking?
